Minnie Pindar’s name reappears as Minnie Gilmore in a 1952 marriage license to Scotty Eckford, a union organizer of Black hotel employees in New York City. Mr. Eckford was also the uncle of Elizabeth Eckford, the American civil rights activist who made history in 1957 when she enrolled in the all-white Little Rock Central High School and attended class. Her younger son, Cleveland Gilmore, was 2 on that unseasonably warm November night in 1929. As an adult, he never talked about rent parties, or life in Harlem at all. He would tell us little things, like how he would buy watermelon for a nickel, but I never knew about his family.”The elder Mr. Gilmore died of a brain aneurysm in 2004, when Amir was 14.

During the past 25 years, Jason Moran has established himself as one of the most cutting-edge pianists and composers in jazz, but some of his most compelling work has been historical in nature. In 2007, he produced the live performance “In My Mind,” a reconsideration and exploration of the work of Thelonious Monk and that jazz great’s iconic 1959 Town Hall concert. In 2011, he presented “Fats Waller Dance Party,” which celebrated the stride-piano master and legendary raconteur and led to a recording three years later. His latest project focuses on an oft-overlooked pioneer of jazz, James Reese Europe (1881-1919), a composer and bandleader who mentored such vital early 20th-century musicians as Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and whose early work prefigured jazz.

To mark the occasion, eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who nabbed two statuettes for his work on the movie, spoke with CNN about his memories from the making of the prescient classic. Alan Menken, composer: “Aladdin” was started almost simultaneously with “(The Little) Mermaid.” While we were still working on “Mermaid,” we had started “Aladdin,” had a whole take on it and it was shelved. We’re winking at everything and making fun.” We were making fun of a genre, but making fun of a genre clearly can bleed over to making fun of a people.
